The Covid Catalog, Gone Too Soon, Romeo Ocampo “Romy” Agtarap
The Covid Catalog remembers Romeo Ocampo “Romy” Agtarap, 63, of New York
Romeo Agtarap was a trained nurse from the Philippines, and he was recruited to work at Peninsula Hospital in Far Rockaway. He moved to New York in 1983, where he worked for decades in New York City hospitals, eventually acquiring a nurse coordinator job at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical, where he managed the hospital’s emergency department, according to his wife, Joy Agtarap.
In 2019, he resigned from his managerial position to work as a part-time nurse in preparation for retirement. But when COVID-19 reached New York City, he resumed many of his tasks.
Agtarap died on April 24, 2020, due to COVID-19 complications. He was 63. He was a hero who spent his career mentoring young nurses and teaching others how to heal through kindness.
