The Covid Catalog, Gone Too Soon, Jorge Martinez.
The Covid Catalog celebrates Jorge Martinez, 53, of Los Angeles.
Jorge Martinez, a resident of South Los Angeles, was a proud salvadoreno. He spent hours on YouTube watching news and TV shows from his native El Salvador. In 2019 Martinez fulfilled his dream of going back home to visit his father. That was the first time since he came to U. S. as an 18-year-old.
Martinez died on June 7, 2020, at California Hospital Medical Center. The cause was COVID-19 complications. He was 53. Martinez started feeling unwell on April 15, when he started having a fever and loss of appetite and sense of taste. His wife had the same symptoms, but she recovered.
Five days later, he started having breathing problems and was admitted to the hospital. Martinez was put on a ventilator on April 29 and spent all of May on the machine.
Martinez spent the last ten years working as an Uber driver. He also worked as the assistant manager at an Echo Park McDonald’s, where he met his wife: Carmelina Ruiz. They both had children from different partners, and they took in each other’s kids as their own.
Besides his wife, Martinez is survived by his children Melvin and Katherine, stepchildren Kelvin and Klevher, father Mario, brother Pedro, and two grandchildren.
